This is the film adaptation based on Frank Herbert's cult novel. The movie Dune serves the fans of Frank Herbert's work well generally, because it is the one true glimpse of the world which he created. While Herbert created his Dune with love and tenderness, David Lynch went wild with many aspects of this film, and the truth and beauty of the novel is lost. However, it still gives some vision to the world Herbert created, and that is good enough for me. I would love to see this movie remade today, using many of the ILM-type of effects used in The Phantom Menace, but without Lynch's gory, sadistic undertones. Before I give my review I would like to backtrack a bit. Now I hadn't seen DUNE since it first came out in 84' when I was like six years old. But just recently I was reminded of it by another movie I saw. I went to see The THIN RED LINE and although I didn't like the movie all that much I did recognize a key element from DUNE; the philosophical voice-overs. So I had to rent it right away, and I picked up the widescreen, remastered version from blockbuster.

Boy was I impressed, it was just like I had remembered it, and to be honest with you even better. Some people like to compare this movie to STAR WARS, but I don't. They are 2 very different movies and should be kept separate when evaluating. DUNE is like a cross between STAR WARS and PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL. It is an incredible movie that stretches the imagination to another level. Fans of George Lucas hate this movie, but fans of Lynch love it, go figure.

Basically if you want a mystical tale with an unbelievable production and special effects, then please rent this movie. By the way, Sting and Kyle MacLaclin are excellent. Also you can find out where the movies, TREMORS & THE THIN RED LINE stole their ideas from. Lynch's third feature may have been a commercial disaster, but it gets under your skin and is marked by unforgettable images and an extraordinary soundtrack. Nowhere. It just does not exist. The closest we have to David Lynch's original vision is the theatrical release. Some people sometimes refer to the extended TV cutthe "director's cut" (and some even dare to offer copies of it in various auction sites under that label), but that couldn't be further removed from reality, that version was rejected by Lynch to the point of deleting his name from the credits. A legal DVD of Dune: The Director's Cut exists, but that's for the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, not this film.

However, the cast and crew of Lynch's Dune have confirmed that Lynch showed them an 'assembly cut' of the film shortly after principal photography wrapped. Although the film had yet to go through post-production, the reaction was very positive. This cut has not been seen since (as is the case with most assembly cuts).

There is also a fan version available, that attempts to get closer to both the novel and David Lynch's original vision: http://www.fanedit.org/ifdb/412-dune-the-alternative-edition-redux It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman, included on his album Parallel Galaxy. Chapman was also the creator of the instrument (knownthe Chapman Stick) that Gurney plays, repainted and with an added lower part to represent the Baliset described by Frank Herbert in the original novel. Herbert was very complimentary towards the film, impressed that Lynch had managed to include so much from his novel in such a short time. He did, however, take a small issue with the portrayal of Paulhaving become a literal god-figure at the end. Both versions contain footage that's missing in the other one, but the Theatrical Version lacks way more footage. Furthermore several scenes have been removed and reinserted afterwards in the TV Version, some of them are edited differently. But these differences aren't mentioned in this comparison because it would break the mold. David Lychn's version is the Theatrical Version btw. He wasn't involved in the TV Version and ordered that his name in the opening credits was going to be replaced by Alan Smithee . The main difference in the two versions is the fact that the TV Version has been split up to smaller episodes. As a result of that, the movie doesn't look like a motion picture anymore but like a big TV production.
